The media landscape is changing rapidly, and audiences — especially younger viewers — are increasingly consuming stories in new formats. Short-form vertical video has already proven hugely successful internationally, with microdramas reaching hundreds of millions of views across platforms. Now, that evolution is reaching Flanders.

Dedsit is currently developing the first Flemish microdramas for PLAY, marking an important step in the exploration of short-form storytelling for local audiences.

Microdramas are short, highly engaging narrative series designed for mobile viewing. Episodes are typically just a few minutes long and are often presented in vertical format, allowing viewers to watch them naturally on their smartphones. Despite their compact runtime, these stories are driven by strong emotional hooks, fast-paced storytelling, and cliffhangers that keep audiences coming back for the next episode.

While the format has already become a major success in international markets, it remains largely unexplored in the Flemish television landscape. That is exactly why Dedsit and PLAY are embracing the opportunity to experiment and innovate together.

For Dedsit, this project represents true pioneering work: exploring new narrative structures, production methods, and viewing habits that reflect how younger audiences consume content today.

The initiative is part of PLAY’s new “Play Shorts” ecosystem, where vertical video formats, microdramas, and other short-form content will live alongside highlights and new experimental formats.

By developing these first Flemish microdramas, Dedsit aims to help shape the next generation of storytelling in the region, combining the craft of television drama with the speed, accessibility, and immediacy of social-first video.

More details about the upcoming microdrama projects will be shared soon.
